LAJIDO - VINHO DE MISSA
The acknowledgment of the excellent quality of the traditional vine varieties of arinto, verdelho and
terrantez was the basis for the creation in 1994 of the demarcated region of Pico for the production of
cordial quality wine produced in a determined region (V.L.Q.P.R.D. "Pico"). The surrealist building
of a maze-like web of black stone walls ("currais") in the old days was also recognized as the only
possible way of guaranteeing that the grapes would be protected on the edge of the atlantic ocean.
The effects of the strong winds and the salty sea winds were thus diminished. Wine-producing activities on the island of Pico - The surrounding warmth, absorbed and given back to the grape vines by the basalt at the time of grape maturation, explains the richness of sugar in the must, which in normal years reaches 14 to 15 degrees of probable alcoholic graduation.
